I have a child so learning how easy it is for a gun to go off was shocking. Experiencing the proper way to shoot a handgun and how to properly lock and store a firearm was great. Loved the course.

Now I've been around guns for years and in that time I've had more than a few instructors coaching everything from basic safety to advanced techniques. But it wasn't until I took my wife to the Ware Shooting Academy to get her Basic Safety course that I met one of the best instructors that I've ever seen working with newbies. Mike (our friendly instructor) has written books about guns and gun culture, contributes to major online journals and newspapers, and even teaches law enforcement classes. He is also a believer that basic safety courses should include live fire exercises, and provides the opportunity to fire a 9mm in the Ware Shooting Academy's own range.
If you're thinking about getting your LTC or even taking some more advanced courses, Mike and The Ware Shooting Academy is the place. It may be a bit of a drive, but it's worth it.
I never knew such a cool place existed so far off the beaten path. It was worth the drive.

I had read the reviews and some were mixed and some outright rude; I went ahead a signed up and I was very pleased and took several pages of notes. I enjoyed how this class was run with regard to the hands-on aspect, you could see it made a solid impact on those folks who had never handled a firearm before. The information he provided was very valuable and practical. He really knows the critical aspects of what you need to know to apply for your LTC, how you should approach owning a firearm and bringing one into your home, and how to effectively help folks understand that this is a serious undertaking. An undertaking that requires respect for the tool and some knowledge of how to handle one properly. He made sure that knowledge extended beyond just sitting there listening and to a hands-on portion. You could see the improvement in folks by the second time they handled the prop gun.
I had previous gun safety training and I think the course does a good job of very basic exposure to this; I wish more was required by law in MA before one can purchase a gun but alas it is not the case in our state. I intend to go forward with more safety training and plan to take his Women's Shooting Course. He was kind enough to spend time after the class was over to talk to me further about questions I had, instruct me on where to go to answer my odd questions about transport to other states, and offer that my housemate could come to observe at some point. He asked me why she had not come and I told him I had asked her but she dislikes guns. He stressed that it is important that even if she does not care for them that she have a certain level of awareness if I was going to bring one into the home; he is absolutely correct. That level of appreciation of the considerations we should have with regard to gun ownership really impressed me ethics wise.
Additionally, along the lines of ethical gun ownership, I really appreciated that he put forth that MA should have some hands-on requirement before MA residents are allowed to purchase a firearm. I hope he can help draft and get legislation to that effect passed. It need not be hours and hours of hands-on exposure but some minimal requirement should be in place. At a minimum I agree that folks should have at least handled a firearm and fired one before making a decision to bring one into their home. He is definitely pro-gun ownership for those folks who want to responsibly own them; that responsibility includes ethical usage, safe storage, legal awareness, and respect for the firearm.
